New Look, Same Formula and Quality

August 29, 2018

You may have noticed that some of your FirstMate Canned Pet Food has a new look. Why the change?

We have not changed the formulation, sourcing, quality or manufacturing.  All cans are still made in our Human Grade, Organic Certified Cannery located in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.  The new labels are intended to improve the overall look and better communicate the unique quality of our diets.

The biggest change is the can itself, and it’s something that we are quite proud of.  We are in the process of switching to tapered cans.  Tapered cans are slightly wider at the top than the bottom.  The only place you’ve probably ever seen tapered cans before is in the canned fish section at your grocery store, and owning a human grade cannery, the aesthetic and quality appealed to us.

The primary advantage of tapered cans is improved can integrity as well as being much eco-friendlier.  Empty cans are shipped in trucks cross-country from where they are manufactured to where they are packed. With straight-walled cans, you must stack them one layer at a time.  Empty tapered cans nest inside each other allowing far more cans to fit on a single pallet.  What used to fill 9 pallets can now be condensed to 1 pallet.  This cuts way down on the overall carbon footprint of the can.  Our cans are also 100% recyclable, inclusive of the label, making it a green product.

Tapered cans are made in the USA with USA metals.  They have provided improved strength in the side walls, while still meeting all quality standards.  Increased structural integrity helps to reduce the number of damaged cans or potentially compromised seals during shipment.

We hope you enjoy the new look as much as we do!

What a great idea! Your products are the best.

Are the new dog food cans small, one meal size cans?? That would be great! We travel alot, and its hard to feed my dog the large size cans when we travel. Alot of waste.

    • FirstMate says:

      Hi Cheryl,

Our dog cans have been formulated intentionally to be identical, complete and balanced for both dogs and cats. Our dog owners that want a smaller portion to enhance their dogs meal can feed our 156g/5.5oz cat cans! We hope this information helps and encourage any follow up questions.

Will the price of caned food increase because of the tariff on US steel? Can’t these cans be made in Canada with Canadian steel which is better than American steel.

    • FirstMate says:

      Hi Carol,

We would love the option to purchase these cans from within Canada. Unfortunately there are no Canadian manufacturers of these cans at this time. It is probable small increases could occur as a direct result of tariffs.

We’ve noticed that the dog and cat food have the same ingredients and prefer to get the larger “dog” can. Is this ok to give to our cats?

    • Matt Wilson says:

      Hello Jennifer,

Thank you for your selection of FirstMate and for your question. Our Chicken, Turkey, and Salmon formulas are complete and balanced for dogs and cats in our canned diets.

  5. Why is the name Kasiks appearing on some of my cans?
