Not Your Average Cans

Best Served Stirred!

๐Ÿพ What is the texture of our cans?

Our formulas fall within the pate category although they are different than most other pates within the industry. FirstMate doesnโ€™t use artificial thickeners such as guar gum or carrageenan, making them softer than a traditional pate.

As a result, our diets are much looser and can be stirred into a consistency similar to Greek yogurt. In addition, they do not harden the same way most pates do when refrigerated which is why we receive high palatability feedback on the second day of feeding an opened can. Our formulas use a mix of high quality ingredients and are produced in our very own human grade cannery here in British Columbia.

๐Ÿพ What is the cooking process?

Uncommon in canning, our meats are not precooked. They are cooked once in the can itself, which helps to improve the palatability of our canned diets naturally. The end result is a loose pate that is easily mixed with kibble or can be used as a standalone, complete and balanced diet.

๐Ÿพ How long are cans good for in the fridge?

Our canned food should be consumed within 3 days of refrigeration, similar to our own refrigerated meats.

๐Ÿพ What is the benefit of feeding dry and canned together?

Often our customers find it beneficial to feed a combination of dry and canned products. This allows owners to provide more variety in food choices which can keep mealtime exciting for even the pickiest of pets. The moisture content of canned products can be beneficial to keep pets well hydrated, aid in digestion, and help maintain urinary health.

    Dear folks at First Mate,

I feed your canned foods and my dogs enjoy them. This comment is a bit different:

I’m low-vision and the tiny and faint type on this page is almost impossible for me to see. We low-vision folks would REALLY appreciate it if you could bump up the type size a wee bit and either make it blacker or go to a bold type.

I know this isn’t a big deal to most of the world but there are a LOT of us out here who are low-vision and would love to be able to read the information you are trying to share.

    Thank you
