STILL HAS CHICKEN FAT! Not the best for someone trying to steer clear of chicken, is it 100% guaranteed to not cause an allergic reaction? Seems like false advertising. 🙁

Thank you for sharing your feedback.
Our products are not medical specific and do not provide an allergy guarantee. However, we do make a variety of diets that have helped pet parents who have a dog or cat with food sensitivities.
We use chicken fat in all of our dry formulas as it is far more digestible than most other fat sources commonly used in pet products such as canola oil or sunflower oil, which are derived from a vegetable base.
Our chicken fat is produced using a centrifuge to separate the chicken fat from the chicken protein. When an animal has a food allergy, the allergen(s) that they are reacting to is almost exclusively the protein in that ingredient. Our Chicken Fat is protein-free and, therefore, should not cause a food-related allergy.
That being said, if your pet’s chicken allergies are severe, we would recommend caution in feeding any of our diets, which all contain chicken fat.
It would be our pleasure to arrange a free sample if that would be of interest.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Great brand! I already ordered a bag of the Duck food. My girl has always thrived on these diets, (I feed the ocean fish and endurance grain free) and with the simplistic ingredients, she is not having any digestive issues. Thank you for adding a duck protein line! This is one of the proteins she does very well on.

Just ordered this for the first time and my dogs absolutely love it. I’ve never had a grain-free dog food that my dogs would just eat all in one sitting (my dogs like to munch throughout the day), but they clearly like the taste of this food. A bit more expensive, but the grain/pea/gluten-free recipe is worth it from our standpoint.
Feel free to check out all the reputable spots that provide legit reviews of dog food and you’ll see this stuff is REALLY good.

We are so happy and glad we have discovered this wonderful dog food.
Our senior Border Collie has IBS and First Mate Duck, Pumpkin food gives him no problems with his digestion, he has now firm and small amount of stool.
His skin looks healthy and he has a thick, shiny fur.
He likes to eat First Mate Duck, Pumpkin food and we like the size of the kibbles, he can chew and does not swallow the entire kibble, It is good for his oral health.
We very appreciate the company philosophy; that it is family owned and their honesty where they source the ingredients.
They choose only humanly raised food animals, this is very important for us.
Thank you and keep up the wonderful work

My dog was severely allergic to this. We’ve ordered an allergy test to identify which ingredient but he’s never had this reaction before to any other food and he is 13. I do not recommend.

I am providing a review for several reasons: I have a male standard poodle that is now 11 years old. When he was age 4 he was diagnosed with a very severe ear infection, came very close to having the eardrum removed even after numerous medications, scopes etc. Then seen by a specialist and with the right meds and diagnosed foods to avoid everything cleared up. The thing is that specific vet prescribed foods – the rare proteins – rabbit; crocodile, kangaroo – is very expensive – at that time I could afford it. After several years I decided to try an over the counter dog food and with much research landed on FirstMate – started with the lamb limited ingredient – no reactions whatsoever! The vet was surprised. I also questioned the chicken fat (he is not to eat chicken) – for my dog and perhaps others, chicken fat is not an allergen because it is not a protein – information given to me by my vet, because I was also concerned about this as an ingredient. I contacted the representative at First Mate and I experienced a very thorough discussion on the limited ingredient foods; cross contamination and product sourcing. I have always had my dogs blood tested for protein allergens – just to be safe – most every dog I have had has had some range of food allergy it is not something I am new to with my dogs. I also need to say that it is rare that a Canadian dog food company produces this type of quality limited ingredient dog food; with the understanding that like people no two dogs are the same in their allergy experiences. I would highly recommend FirstMate dog food due to the quality.

Excellent for my dog. He has IBD, he has many food intolerances, this is the only food he has done well with since we started down this road with novel proteins. He doesn’t tolerate legumes well, so happy we found this food. Please never stop producing it!
