My puppy is going through a weird GI system phase. I have tried five high quality foods with no success. I heard about this food on a Facebook group and decided to try it. It is fantastic!
I love that is doesn’t have a super long ingredient list. I really love that it is lower fat. Despite the lower fat, this food is nearly 500 kcal per cup, so it’s great for dogs who don’t want to eat or can’t digest a bunch of food at once to get the calories they need. When you soak this food, it disintegrates with absolutely no swelling. Maybe that doesn’t matter, but it makes me feel better!
Another real plus is the complete lack of potatoes, peas, and legumes. And the fish that is used is not salmon or cod–iinstead they use sardines, anchovies, and herring. Just a little different fish option for those of us who prefer fish.
One more thing. This food has an AAFCO rating of all life stages including growth of large breed dogs. So it can work for any size breed puppy plus your adults! Great for this of us with multiple dogs.
I’ve always been a big fan of grain inclusive foods that are high in meat content (this food has 74% of the protein from the fish) but also utilize grains. With the recent popularity of grainfree foods, I have been dismayed to see a decline in selection of really high quality grain friendly kibble. I’m so excited to find this food !! Thank you!! I feel like your number one fan on all of the Facebook dog food groups!!! I just wish my local store could get it in Madison WI

I’ve switched all my dogs to this food. I have a dog diagnosed with DCM and the cardiologist told me to take him off any food with legumes or tubers. She said this food was fine. I’ve always liked First Mate and am happy that they are making a “grain friendly” option for those of us that don’t want grain free.

My dear old dog has several issues: bladder stone history and ongoing intermittent seisures. He is doing so very well in the last few years with this food. And he likes it!

I have just started my 4 year old dog with GI issues with the fish and oat formula also soaking it. It seems to work

Switched my English mastiff x American bulldog off nutro lamb and brown rice large breed to FirstMate dog food wild pacific caught fish due to a food allergy seem to be a success so far??

I love that FirstMate has a fish grain friendly option. I have used this since they first came out with this specific line and flavor. I have one puppy who has an allergy to all feathered animals and lamb. I am comfortable feeding this brand and line since they have the chicken fat in it but remove the protein out of the chicken. She has not had a reaction to any of the products and it works well for everyone. I recommend FirstMate all the time.

I have never had my puppy do so good on a food and we’ve tried what feels like everything. Her coat is shiny & soft and her poops are good too but it also keeps her interest! We love it and she loves it.

I’ve got a Wheaten Terrier with IBD. Looking for a lower fat food, no chicken protein, no potatoes, no peas, etc. So far, he happily eats this! I soak it and he gobbles it up. Transition from bland diet to this went smoothly for my very sensitive guy.

This was one of the foods that had high Taurine results on tested dogs in the UC Davis DCM trial. I mix it with Farmina Ancestral grain Chicken and Pomegranate which also had high Taurine results. I have a young Golden Retriever and I believe she is on the best foods to not get an enlarged heart. She loves this food!

I just wanted to say THANK YOU! I’ve had a hard time trying to find a kibble that would suit my (problematic, yet still lovely) dog. He’s always had itchy skin and bad poop problems, and since it couldn’t get worse, I turned to this food without any transition (I know….).
It’s been two weeks now and I’m breathing again. The more the time pass, the less his skin itches, and his poop turned back to normal and in a smaller quantity. His coat is shinnier than before, and even if he didn’t used to have weight problems, he seem more slimmer and in a better shape. Plus, this food is affordable, safe and needed in a fewer quantity than the brand I used to give my dog. Ah, my dog also adores the taste, every meal is a party for him (which I didn’t experience since I gave him Origen$$$$).
In short, my dog and I love Firstmate. Thank you!

We’ve got six corgis and one of those is a picky eater. She used to go 3 days without eating. Since we’ve switched They all eat quickly but my picky eater eats every meal. We all love firstmates. Thank you

I have 4 dogs. An old boxer, young boxer, very tiny 9 year old Boston, and a little hairy papillon/chi X. Young boxer has many allergies and vet recommended Natural Balance Duck & Potato. All dogs transitioned over and were doing fine until Natural Balance changed their formula. The little Boston started having severe diarrhea when Natural Balance changed formulas (without informing customers). We changed foods gradually resulting in continued diarrhea for Boston, and young boxer developed pancreatitis (heart murmur detected also). Medical emergency, went to vet. Started all dogs on home cooked rice & ground turkey and probiotics. Slowly transitioned to hydrolyzed salmon then onto this First Mate wild caught Pacific fish and oats. All dogs are doing FANTASTIC! They love it, diarrhea and pancreatitis is gone. Coats are softer and shinier than ever! Price is great. I couldn’t be happier and strongly recommend First Mate!

This food is AMAZING! I am an advocate for this when anyone asks for a recommendation! Grain Friendly, no legumes, wild caught fish, no chicken protein, & AAFCO approved for large breeds! I went months trying to find the right food for my German Malinois, this is it!!! Thank you so much FirstMate, my girls tummy is finally happy, and my wallet is too! 🙂

We put this into the kibble rotation for our 6 year old Saint Bernard after moving away from grain free food due to DCM fears. She always seems very uninterested in it and barely ever finishes her meals, which is concerning, as she normally gobbles up anything we put in front of her. In cases where she does eat it, she tends to vomit and/or have an audibly noisey and gurgly stomach quite often, more so than with any other brand. The kibble seems extremely dense and heavy and aways has a strange odor. Should we pre-soak it to aid in digestion? At a loss.

Hello Tyler,
Thank you for your support of our FirstMate pet food for your dog. We are sorry to hear that your dog is not enjoying the Wild Pacific Caught Fish & Oats, and we appreciate you contacting us with your concerns.
How long have you been including this formula in your dog’s rotation? Are you still on the first bag, or have you had multiple bags with the same effect? What other formulas are included in the rotation?
Each bag is coded with a lot # and expiry date. If you can send us this information our quality control team will complete a batch audit. Our batch audits include a complete review of the ingredient sourcing, manufacturing records and quality control check-points. We are also able to pull product from the sample we retain from each batch for further testing as required.
Our kibble does tend to be dense compared with other brands. Some people do add water to soak the kibble prior to feeding, and this should help aid in the initial digestion of the kibble.
We look forward your response.
Sincerely,
Wendy

I feed both my pug and Rottweiler puppy this food and pug’s allergy issues have substantially subsided. Everyone comments on my Rottie’s shiny coat and it is definitely attributed to this food. I am very picky about what my pets eat and this food is comparable to other higher priced pet food.

I have 2 Golden Retrievers that are half brothers. The 5 year old, Willy, has struggled with skin itchiness his whole life. My vet was skeptical that the diet he was on (a higher end chicken or lamb diet) was causing the issue. Before putting Willy on powerful meds, I wanted to do an experiment with a complete diet change. I did my research and decided to choose a grain friendly diet with a protein source that was not beef, chicken of lamb. And I wanted a simple list of ingredients. First Mate Wild Pacific Caught Fish & Oats Formula made the cut. Willy has been eating this food for 6 weeks now. His scratching has been significantly reduced. He LOVES the food and so does his brother! Thank you, First Mate for formulation this food. It is so needed for our sweet companions!

My 10yr old Shitzu Bichon has always had troubles with his tummy. We put him in royal canin gastrointestinal from the vet , works perfectly but $160 a bag forget it.
I went to the best pet store and the knowledgeable staff recommended firstmate wild caught pacific fish and oats amazing no problems love it and 1/2 the price. Couldn’t be happier ❤️❤️

My 18m golden doodle has had tons of digestion issues. She’s allergic to chicken (ear infections). So I had to move to single protein foods to try something new. But her poos were awful and unpredictable so I would be up in the night to take her out. I tried eliminating all kinds of food and finally focused on peas and legumes. Try finding a single protein food without chicken AND peas and legumes. In Canada, I found one. It was a lamb and rice formula from the US. Her poos got harder – but much harder. So that wasn’t the ideal solution. Finally one day I found a list of every Canadian pet food manufacturer and went to every website to look for a single protein that wasn’t chicken and without peas and legumes. And that’s how I landed here. My pet store has started supplying it because of all the research I did and the desire to have higher quality grain friendly foods. What’s perhaps most amazing though is this food costs less than most high quality foods and my dog needs less of it for her body weight. She is happy and healthy on this food and I’m so grateful for a pet food company that bucked the trends and made a healthy and balanced line of pet foods to meet different needs. And it’s Canadian! (The other suitable one was from the US which I didn’t like.)

My 2 year old golden retriever has allergies to chicken, beef and lamb (they all give him diarrhea). When I was researching food for our new puppy, I was directed to First Mate and this formula. I’m ecstatic that it’s for all life stages – and my 2 year old LOVES it so much he actually dances for his food as I’m putting it in his dish. I would NEVER go grain-free so when I found this grain-friendly food with fish as the main protein… it was the perfect solution. And both dogs love it. Thank you so much for making this! I’m proud to be able to support a Canadian company!

I was happy with this dog food. Over the last 2 months I had noticed the smell when opening the bag wasn’t as fishy. Really not fishy at all, more plain smelling. Also the kibble has grain or similar looking straw like that is sticking out which is pointy, also what appears to be bone fragments.
Typical for a company to start out good and over time lacks the quality and inspection of their product.
I’m hoping maybe a bad batch but still should have been caught before distributing out to the public.

This is an excellent dog food. Healthy, and my dog loves it.

My Labrador retriever struggled with soft stool for a long time. This food, along with vitamin B and limited treat ingredients, finally got us to a good place. Ask your vet if this makes sense for you, of course.
He likes the food, but he’s a Lab…

My border collie is currently on the FirstMate high performance but i wanted to switch up the proteins and try the fish and oat. Just like the high performance he is excited to eat unlike his old food which he barely touched. Happy, incredibly healthy, itching stopped, small firm stools couldnt be happier. Wont feed him anything other then this brand.

I’m so happy I found this dog food. My dog is allergic to chicken, turkey, and pork so finding something grain inclusive AND without those ingredients was tough. She was on another brand, but her poop was always a little soft serve. After switching to this, she has perfect poops and loves the food! I also like that they remove the chicken protein so I don’t have to worry about her allergy.
